What is the dress code for Wilmington Middle School?

The guiding principles in determining a dress code for students are as follows:

  • The school administration will determine inappropriate attire on a case-by-case basis.
  • Students are not to wear tank tops, halter-tops, or sleeveless shirts, and the midriff must be completely covered at all times.
  • Shorts must be of a modest and appropriate length.
  • Pants are to be at the waist at all times. No undergarments may be showing. Holes in pants or shorts must be below a student’s fingertips.
  • The students should dress in a manner as to reflect neatness and cleanliness in appearance, and at the same time be in good taste with both the community and the school.
  • A student has the right to attend classes dressed to suit his/her individual preference, as long as personal appearance does not constitute a hazard to his/her health, safety, or welfare.
  • A student’s personal appearance must not cause a disruption that interferes with the orderly presentation of classroom materials in the educational process.
  • Most of all, we believe the parents/legal guardian should accept the responsibility for determining the mode of clothing their children wear to school. On occasion, it may be necessary to consult with the parent when we feel that a student’s dress or appearance is not appropriate.
  • Students are not to wear t-shirts or other items of clothing/jewelry that depict or refer to alcohol, drugs, tobacco, obscenities, or those that may be offensive to others in school.
  • Students are not to wear hats, bandanas, and hoods at school.
  • Students cannot wear or bring coats and blankets to class.
  • Clothing, jewelry, symbols, or other items worn to evidence membership in any gang are not permitted.
  • Students are not to wear wallet chains at school.
  • A student shall not draw any depiction that may represent drug use or drugs in general.

For more details regarding our dress code, please review the student handbook.

What will happen if my child becomes ill while at school?

If a student becomes ill, we will attempt to notify a parent or guardian promptly, and we will care for the student in our nurse’s station until a parent or guardian arrives. Students may not leave school grounds without either a parent or another approved adult (as listed on the student’s information form). If the situation is a medical emergency, we will follow standard emergency procedures.

May I visit my child at school?

We encourage parents to visit our school and support their child’s education. However, to ensure the safety of all our students we have instituted the following policy:

We require visitors at each of our schools to provide a driver’s license upon entry. This identification is scanned and cross-referenced with online databases highlighting individuals who have been convicted as sex offenders or with other crimes against children.

Is my child eligible to ride the bus?

Wilmington CUSD provides transportation services to students who live too far from school to walk. If you would like more information about bus routes or times, please visit our district website. The school bus is an extension of our school; all school rules and applicable consequences apply.
