WMS Clubs

WMS provides students the opportunity to join extracurricular clubs before and after school. These clubs are a great place to meet new people, connect with others who share your interests, and/or discover a new hobby. We encourage you to join!

Spelling Team

Spelling team is a group of students who compete against one another to win a position in representing WMS at the regional and conference level spelling bee. Practice begins in December for the first competition held in February.

Science Club

Science club is an interactive, hands-on club where we work on complex scientific experiments. Some of our past projects include balsa bridge building, starfish dissection, film canister rockets, DNA extraction from fruit, and Snap Circuits. Science club meets once a month throughout the school year, and continues from year to year.

Math Team 6th, 7th, & 8th Grade

This team is for students interested in solving math problems. We meet weekly starting in October, and participate in two competitions–Momence Competition and IVC competition.

Speech Team

Members of the WMS speech team are people who like to talk in front of others. We expect those on the team to attend a once-a-week practice session with Mrs. Papineau. Students must memorize speeches within the first two weeks to be able to practice blocking (moving), facial expressions, and gestures. We will participate in the state speech contest in November. Contest is always on a Saturday.

Aerospace Team

This team is for seventh and eighth grade students that would like to participate in simulations for an actual space mission to Mars. Aerospace team meets one to two times weekly from December through April. There is an application process for this team. Chosen students will be part of various mission specialist teams. The program provides students with the authentic encounter in science, math, technology, and team building skills.

WMS National Beta Club

This club is an honor/service organization for seventh and eighth grade students. These students must meet certain academic and leadership requirements for membership. There is a fall induction each year. Beta club subcommittees organize events and community service projects throughout the whole school year.

Student Council

The Wilmington Middle School Student Council gives students a hands-on experience with democratic government as they represent their peers and take responsibility for activities within the school and community. Students in all grade levels may participate. Students have to apply to become a member, and the representatives elect their officers.

Scholastic Bowl

Scholastic Bowl is a fun, fast-paced quiz competition for students at WMS. If you enjoy Jeopardy or other trivia games, you should consider participating in this activity. During club meetings, we learn trivia facts and test one another on our knowledge to prepare for competitions against other schools. Competitions are typically in February and March.

Art Club

This club enhances and lets students demonstrate and further their in class art work. The club also works along with the middle school play sponsors to create sets for the play. Join us on Wednesdays after school until 3:30 p.m.

Page Turners Book Club

Page turners book club encourages students at WMS to read quality literature from a variety of genres. We introduce our members to new authors, as well as classic literature. Everyone reads a few chapters from the same book, and then we meet in the library every other Tuesday at 11:40 a.m. to exchange our ideas and opinions. Book club members will watch book trailers and maybe even make a few ourselves. We may also participate in other events such as the WHS Homecoming Parade, field trips to bookstores for author book signings, or Skyping with another middle school book club.

Yearbook

This club is for eighth grade students. The club decides on a cover and page layout for the upcoming yearbook. The students help with page designs, names on pictures, and proof reading.

Middle School Play

Middle school play is for students interested in acting. The students must to audition, attend practices, and perform in front of an audience. Tryouts for the play are in February. Practice begins in March, and performances are the first week of May.

Middle school set design team meets and designs the stage set for the play, starting in February.
